Health Benefits of Quinoa
The ancient seed of Quinoa is so versatile and such an important source of nutrients that it has been referred to as the "gold" of the Incas. It is known to increase stamina, a useful aid in days gone by when "warriors" needed every bit of advantage they could get when their "people" were under attack.
However, such is the structure of Quinoa, it has the benefit of being a natural and complete protein. This means that it has all the amino acids like acid lysine which is very important for the repair and growth of body tissue. As shown below, it is known to be beneficial to the body in a number of ways - nature's natural remedy.
Migraines and hypertension
Riboflavin and magnesium are the natural aids in Quinoa for bad headaches. They are known to help relax the blood vessels, which reduces constriction and so eases tension. Basically they help the body to function better which in turn eases the stress the body experiences when circumstances make it over work. While no one claims it makes headaches go away, it can help and is known to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.
Childhood Asthma
Many allergies are connected with grass seeds but Quinoa is not a grass. It is a plant but is not known to produce serious allergic reactions in people. Asthma is the result of breathing difficulties that are made worse by tension. It is known to have triggers and often there is a family history of asthma. It is known to have got worse over the years and many experts point to our modern living conditions as making it more prevalent. While not all asthma attacks are caused by allergies which may or may not be avoidable, it is known that Quinoa helps to reduce body stress and helps to keep the airways open. It is recommended that children with asthma eat a whole food diet. Many of the nutrients that we need are in Quinoa such as Magnesium which naturally helps to reduce spasms in the bronchial tubes. We know that many asthma sufferers are short of vitamin b, minerals like magnesium, zinc and iron all of which can be found in Quinoa. Why not check out some of the recipes and see which ones are easiest to include in your child's diet.
Gallstones
This is another surprising area where Quinoa is known to be useful. It may not get rid of gallstones but it can help protect their development. Indeed this is another case where a wholesome diet rich in fiber can aid in the digestion of foodstuffs. As it is a soluble fiber it speeds through the intestines and reduces the need of increased bile production. Too much bile production helps to develop gallstones so this is another natural remedy for our bodies.
Type 2 Diabetes
Quinoa is rich in magnesium which is a mineral that is essential in the body's ability to deal with glucose and insulin. Yet again there is evidence that Quinoa, as part of a whole food diets aids in the digestion of foods. It is also known to increase Insulin sensitivity while reducing triglycerides (blood fats which need to be kept low in diabetics).
Heart Disease
Quinoa is known to prevent the clogging of arteries and veins which in turn helps to relieve stresses on the heart. The fat in Quinoa is good fat in that is low in cholesterol and can help reduce blood pressure thanks to the presence of potassium and magnesium. In other words it is a good source of protein without the drawbacks of too much saturated fat and cholesterol.
Pregnant Mums
Quinoa is known to be an endurance food which gives energy. It is also known to be a good source of Iron which pregnant mums are always advised to increase in their diet. It is good for tissue repair and development of teeth and bones. Along with the other benefits of Quinoa, it is a useful source of goodness that forming babies will demand in plenty as they grow. It is also good for Mums when they are feeding as it will improve the quality of milk for new-born infants.
Cataracts
Quinoa is thought to help prevent cataracts and may aid those with the condition. Studies have shown that people who absorb about 99 grams of protein were only half as likely to develop nuclear cataracts(light is difficult to pass through the centre of the eye) while those with the greater polyunsaturated fats about 17 grams a day were 30 percent likely not to develop problems with the outer lens(corticular cataracts).
Nowadays, we are looking more and more to natural foods. We all know the benefits of fibre in our diet but until more recently we have forgotten about Quinoa.

Health Risks and Smoking
Almost everyone knows that smoking is bad for the health but what they probably do not know are the health risks associated with smoking. One common disease that can be acquired through smoking is lung cancer but smoking can also cause a myriad other diseases and illnesses. Smoking can also cause death in severe cases; deaths that occur due to smoking mostly come from complications from the heart and lungs.
You may wonder just exactly how smoking can damage your health. Take note of this fact; smoking contains around four thousand chemical compounds, some of which are not yet known, and you take these compounds into your bloodstream, your lungs, your heart, and your brain. It is really no wonder that there are many heath risks associated with smoking.
When you light up a cigarette, it burns at around sever hundred degrees centigrade at the tip and roughly sixty degree centigrade at the center. The heat from the cigarette will enable the tobacco to release harmful substances while you are smoking the cigarette. Some of the most harmful substances in cigarettes known today include tar which is a compound that causes cancer, nicotine which is a compound that causes addiction and heightens the cholesterol in the body, and carbon monoxide which is a substance known to decrease the oxygen found in the body.
Some factors that may increase the health risks associated with smoking include the number of cigarettes you regularly smoke, the kind of prepared tobacco in your cigarette, and the whether your cigarette is filtered or not. Likewise, it is also important to note how your life expectancy is affected by the amount of cigarettes you smoke. Recent studies have showed that because of the health risks associated with smoking, the life expectancy of smokers is reduced by around seven to eight years on the average.
Major diseases can be a result of too much smoking, for example, cardiovascular diseases is one of the common health risks associated with smoking today. Most of the symptoms include the hardening of your arteries and the blood clots are more likely to occur. There are also various kinds of cardiovascular diseases you can acquire. Most heart diseases that come from smoking will depend of the blood vessels involved.
You should be aware also that heart diseases do not develop overnight, rather, it is due to regular smoking and the succeeding increased health risks associated with smoking. One such disease is called the coronary thrombosis wherein the blood clots occur in the arteries; this can later lead to a heart attack if not immediately treated. Another disease is known as cerebral thrombosis, this type of disease involves the brain. Basically, cerebral thrombosis can lead to stroke or even paralysis because the blood supply to the brain is blocked. Meanwhile, another health risks associated with smoking is kidney failure because of the high blood pressure you sometimes experience. In some worse cases when the vascular supply in the body is blocked, amputation may be necessary. So know the health risks associated with smoking first before you inhale that next cigarette.

Health Benefits Of Basil
Basil is a popular herb in Italian cooking, particularly in pesto. This fragrant and flavorful herb, a relative of peppermint, is an excellent, nutritious addition to your pasta sauce, soup, or salad.
An array of flavonoids exist in basil, which help to protect cells and chromosomes from damage. Studies have shown that two of these flavonoids in particular, orientin and vicenin, are useful in protecting cell structures and chromosomes from damage by radiation and oxygen.
Essential oil of basil has been shown to inhibit the growth of several types of bacteria, many of which have become resistant to antibiotics. This essential oil has been found to inhibit growth of the widespread staphylococcus, enterococcus, pseudomonas, and e. coli bacteria, among others. Adding basil to your vinaigrette will both enhance the flavor, and ensure that the fresh salad greens are safe to eat.
Eugenol, which is found in essential oil of basil, provides an anti-inflammatory effect, by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. Aspirin and Ibuprofen work by blocking this same enzyme. So, basil can have healing benefits, and provide relief from the symptoms of inflammatory problems, like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions.
Basil is also a good source of vitamin A, which helps to prevent damage to the cells by free radicals. Vitamin A also prevents free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the blood stream, preventing the cholesterol from building up in the blood vessels.
Magnesium is also present in basil. This essential mineral helps the heart and blood vessels to relax, improving blood flow. Other nutrients found in basil include iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C.
The fresh, spicy flavor and scent of basil will wake up any boring salad or soup. Use fresh basil whole, or shredded to add a burst of flavor to your dinner. If you are using fresh basil in a cooked dish, add it towards the end of cooking, so that the volatile oils will not be dissipated by the heat.
Insalata Caprese is a simple salad, utilizing tomatoes, fresh mozzerella cheese, basil, and olive oil.
1/2 pound, fresh mozzerella, sliced 1/4 inch thick.
2 large tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick.

Skin Care: Effective Ingredients
Modern skin care products contain various ingredients that are effective for many purposes, including cleansing, healing, soothing and firming. The following is a list of ingredients to look for in these products:
ALLANTOIN is a chemical extracted from the comfrey root. It is an anti-irritant with healing and soothing properties that makes an excellent additive in face creams, masks and lotions.
ALMOND OIL is a vegetable oil extracted from almond seeds. It stays fresher longer than many other similar nut oils and for this reason it is used in many skin care products.
ALOE VERA is a natural moisturizer. It serves as a delivery system for other vitamins and nutrients in skin care products and can probably be considered an essential ingredient in almost all skin care products.
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID is an anti-oxidant with a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. The fat soluble portion of alpha lipoic acid is of tremendous benefit to the skin. Substances that are water soluble do not penetrate the skin very well, but fat soluble molecules do penetrate.
ASCORBIC ACID is a water soluble form of Vitamin C which promotes collagen production. Vitamin C also has anti-inflammatory properties and defends against free radicals in the skin created by sunlight, ozone and harsh chemicals.
CHAMOMILLA RECUTITA (MATRICARIA) EXTRACT is from chamomile which is one of the few herbs that has any value for the skin. A mild mixture of chamomile leaves produces an oily substance that is soothing to the skin. Matricaria is a derivative of chamomile that some experts believe hastens skin healing.
DMAE is a nutritional substance that can be found in fish such as salmon. It is an anti-inflammatory, anti-aging topical agent that increases skin health, tone and radiance. A landmark study in which DMAE and alpha lipoic acid were combined in a topical solution showed marked resolution in scarring for patients with surgical scars when applied twice daily. It can also reduce the severity of atrophic (indented) acne scars. DMAE can also act as a penetration enhancer to increase the anti-inflammatory effects of alpha lipoic acid. Topical application of DMAE has a cumulative effect and can decrease the appearance of large pores over time.
EVENING PRIMROSE OIL is a source of GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid), an Omega-6 essential fatty acid which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.
GLYCERIN is a clear, syrupy liquid made by chemically combining water and fat. The water splits the fat into smaller components, glycerol and fatty acids. It improves the spreading quality of creams and lotions and prevents them from losing water through evaporation.
GRAPESEED EXTRACT is important to skin care because it protects collagen from damage by free radicals, dampens inflammation and helps maintain the health and integrity of blood vessels.
GREEN TEA EXTRACT helps protect the skin from damaging free radicals. It contains powerful anti-oxidants called polyphenols that are also excellent anti-inflammatories.
HYALURONIC ACID is a substance found in human cells that helps hold moisture in the skin, as much as 300 times its own weight in water. This is an extremely effective ingredient that can also be quite costly.
JOJOBA OIL is an expensive oil extracted from the jojoba seed that can provide a good film of moisture.
KERATIN is the protein that is the primary constituent of the hair, nails and skin.
OMEGA-3 & -6 OILS are essential fatty acids important to skin health. The Omega-3 essential fatty acids dramatically reduce the body's production of inflammatory compounds. The active ingredients in Omega-6 oils are derived from linoleic acid.
PANTHENOL is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory.
SQUALENE is a substance derived from shark lipid that contains large quantities of Vitamins A and D and has very good emollient properties.
TRIETHANOLAMINE is an alkali that handles oil well by emulsifying it.
UBIQUINONE preserves the anti-oxidant action of Vitamin C and protects cell membranes against oxidative damage.
UREA is a natural substance that removes dead, dry skin cells. Urea both soothes dry skin and stimulates cell growth in the epidermis. It is a valuable additive in moisturizers. It is an aquaphilic compound that both attracts water and prevents its loss. It is the dry epidermis' best friend. Acne-prone people should also use products containing urea as it seals in moisture without clogging pores.
VITAMIN A is probably the most important vitamin involved in the appearance of the skin. It can pas through the skins' layers and may exert an effect on the rate of keratinization of the skin. It is also an excellent ingredient in acne preparations, dry skin care and soothing creams for burns and irritated skin. Retinyl palmitate is a form of Vitamin A that some studies indicate turns into Retin-A (the acidic form of Vitamin A) in the skin. Retin-A appears to be one of the only products that when applied to the surface of the skin reduces lines and wrinkles and restores pink color to aging skin.
VITAMIN D is absorbed through the skins' outer layers. There is some evidence demonstrating that it exerts a healing effect on the skin when applied topically. It seems to work particularly well when combined with Vitamin A.
VITAMIN E is a powerful anti-oxidant.
This list in fairly comprehensive but by no means exhaustive. It is important to note that many of the above ingredients work well together and can have a synergistic effect when combined.

Skin-Fessions of a Beauty Editor
Having spent a big chunk of my working life as a beauty ed, charged with the excruciating task of testing and trialling countless beauty products, I consider myself a bit of a high priestess when it comes to all things beauty. Having lathered, applied and subjected myself to all forms of treatments, I've earned the title, I reckon. So listen up girlfriends - this is an insider's take on your skin salvation.
Failing to cleanse day and night.
Using a cleanser with sodium-lauryl sulphate (SLS) - a nasty chemical used as petrol degreaser and found in beauty products to make them foam. Really bad and harsh on skin + suggestions it can enter the bloodstream and make its way to vital organs - scary stuff; keep away!
-Failing to exfoliate skin at least once a week.
-Squeezing/picking pimples.
-Using products that contain harsh chemicals.
-Skipping on sun protection.
-Not using a moisturiser daily.
-Thou shalt cleanse skin twice a day - morning and night.
-Thou shalt exfoliate skin with a gentle exfoliant twice a week.
-Thou shalt moisturise skin daily.
-Thou shalt use gentle, natural products that do not overstimulate skin, leading to breakouts.
-Thou shalt wear a sunscreen when out in the sun.
-Thou shalt not pick zits.
-Thou shalt wear a bronzer instead of foundation - much lighter and less clogging to skin.
-Thou shalt not smoke - the nicotine in the tobacco smoke narrows the blood vessels taking
oxygen to the skin via the bloodstream. Skin with less oxygen takes on a greyish tinge, and fine lines and wrinkles appear because the skin is dry and less elastic. If you want gorgeous, glowing skin, dump the cigarettes.
-Thou shalt eat healthy foods - remember, what you put into your body is what you get out of it. Put in bad food and out comes bad stuff in the form of zits! Thou shalt follow these skin care basics and thou shalt be blessed with beautiful skin.
