Beauty Care Products: Reality and Hype
Do you spend a lot of money on beauty care products? Do you wonder what works and what doesn't, and how much is really worth paying for a beauty care product? Well, the last question really depends on how much money you have and what you expect to get for your money, but the first question is worth spending a little time on. Let's take two popular beauty care products, chosen at random, and consider what the label says and what the ingredient list tells us: St. Ives ® Swiss Formula Apricot Scrub and Clairol Herbal Essences ® Citrus Lift Shampoo.
The Apricot Scrub product package tells us to "Discover the Swiss Secrets for Smooth, Radiant Skin," and brags about containing "Pure Swiss Glacial Water." A quick read of the ingredients list reveals the following in order of total quantity: water, glyceryl stearate, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, corn kernal meal, cocamidopropyl betaine, and more than 13 additional ingredients, some recognizable and some with long chemical names. The Citrus Lift shampoo bottle brags about its "100% certified organic blend of tangerine, lemongrass, and aloe." Reading the ingredient list reveals, in order of total quantity: water, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium chloride, citric acid, sodium citrate, and then finally the tangerine extract, followed by more than 13 additional ingredients, most with long chemical names.
Now, what does all this mean? First of all, pure water is pure water whether it comes from a melting glacier or from a water distiller or distillation and deionization machine in a cosmetics factory. Second, our hair and skin can't tell whether an extract of tangerine came from an organically grown tangerine or from the more common variety. These things, glacier water and organic fruits, are in the realm of hype - nice sounding marketing words, but not related to the actual performance of the beauty care products at hand.
So, what makes these commercial beauty care products better than just plain soap? Science. Science in the form of ingredients like the one, in addition to water, present in both the scrub and the shampoo: cocamidopropyl betaine. This compound is used in more than 1,000 shampoo, bubble bath and hand and face cleansing products. It helps to enhance foaming and helps to stabilize the foam while providing good wetting properties (the ability of the cleaner to get through the oil that can repel soap and water from skin and hair). This ingredient is in so many products because the people who developed the products found out that it is safe and effective for this application, the results of basic and applied scientific work. It is the science and chemistry, not the hype that makes these beauty care products work. The hype helps you agree to pay the price asked by the large, profitable shampoo, cosmetics and beauty care products companies that sell you the products.
Do you want to know something interesting? You can buy a gallon bottle of cocamidopropyl betaine for $14.55 and you can pick up a five-gallon pail for only $68.75. That's a lot of shampoo, face scrub and bubble bath! In fact, one gallon is enough for more than 250 twelve ounce bottles of shampoo. Not surprisingly, the total cost of the ingredients in most beauty products is far less than the price you pay at a brick and mortar store or cosmetics online store for the product.

Skin Care Cream – 5 Tips For Finding a Product
Isn't it funny how many different skin care creams there are on the market. Each one claiming to be the greatest skin care product ever invented.
It gets even more confusing when you look at the prices. Some are priced like there's gold in the bottle and a mystical, skin rejuvenating, magic ingredient inside. Yet, what appears to be a similar product is just a fraction of the cost. Does that make the expensive one better?
Well, here's a few tips to help you select the best skin care and moisturizer cream:
1. Don't be fooled by the marketing hype. Pretty bottles and celebrity endorsements don't guarantee a good quality product. In fact, those things are often done to sell more products. They have little to no bearing on what goes into their research or their ingredients.
2. Don't let the price fool you. Many people make their decision based upon price. They expect that a higher priced product is going to be better than a lower priced on. Often some of the expensive products use inferior ingredients or trace amounts of the good stuff. Profitability is their concern, not the effectiveness of their product on your skin.
3. A skin care moisturizer cream is beneficial, but don't expect a moisturizer to fix lines and wrinkles. It's good to keep the skin hydrated, but hydration will not reverse the signs of aging. You need a cream specifically designed to get rid of wrinkles.
Specifically, get a skin cream that promotes the regrowth of collagen and elastin. But, here's a warning: Don't be duped by products that include collagen as an ingredient. Collagen molecules are too big to be absorbed by your skin. The best way to get more collagen is for your body to regrow it.
There are products that regrow collagen and elastin that will give you younger skin.
4. Regrow collagen and elastin by using Keratin. Without boring you with a lot of scientific details, Keratin is a protein that promotes skin elasticity, and it's is found naturally in our bodies. However, as we age, the levels of Keratin in our bodies are not sufficient to keep our skin looking smooth and useful. But, by applying Keratin to the skin, we can supply our skin with the Keratin we no longer have available.
But, you should look for a special form of Keratin called Cynergy TK. It's a deep penetrating form that is from New Zealand. And, a study of Cynergy TK showed a sustained improvement in skin elasticity of 42% over 18 days. This ingredient works.
5. Another key skin care and moisturizer ingredient is Phytessence Wakame. This is a kelp that is only found only in the Japanese sea. What makes this ingredient so special is that it stops a harmful enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Without hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin fibers lose their "glue". This leads to wrinkles and dark eye circles.

Antioxidant Skin Care Products
Because of the skin's status of being the body's primary defense against bacterial or chemical invasion, it has one of the most complex systems of first and secondary reactions to foreign intrusion.
Reactive oxygen species are abundant from the sun's rays. These species pass through the skin and leave trails of free radicals along the way. The species replace the cells' components and change the balance in the cell's system. Because the body's enzymes could not work fast enough to regain the correct balance in the cell system, the cell eventually wrinkles and dies. The species damage the DNA structure in cells, producing abnormal ones that sometimes develop into tumor and cancer cells. And because these reactive oxygen species are truly reactive in nature, their damage can be swift, and they could cover a large area in a short time.
Because the skin is the most "battered" part of the body in terms of the number of forces such as germs and dust and harmful ultraviolet rays that threaten to destroy it, a lot of scientists have developed a wide variety of antioxidant skin care products. Lotions and sun blocks incorporated with vitamin E are developed, which, when applied before exposure to the sun, can minimize entry of harmful ultraviolet rays into the skin. If the skin is exposed without application, on the other hand, these antioxidant skin care products, which have high level of vitamin E, can reduce the reddening caused by sunburns. These are also good minimizing swelling as long as the product is applied within two to three minutes after exposure.
Antioxidants skin care products enriched in coenzyme Q10 are also good for the skin. Coenzyme Q10 is a good antioxidant found in natural cells. However, as a person grows old or is exposed more often to the sun, the amount of coenzyme Q10 decreases. The best way to replenish the coenzyme Q10 is to apply a product rich in this coenzyme such as a moisturizer. For others, choosing the best moisturizer can be difficult, but reading the labels in the bottles will help in determining if coenzyme Q10 is present or not.
Lotions and moisturizers enriched with panthenol are also good for fighting aging caused by reactive oxygen species. Serums and enhancers that contain vitamin C have L-ascorbic acid, which reduces the levels of reactive oxygen species coming from the sun's ultraviolet rays. The latter, moreover, becomes more effective when paired with products containing vitamin E. Nevertheless, the best lotion is the one that contains both vitamins C and E.
Grapeseed oil is another ingredient that would make a skin care product effective in ridding the skin of reactive oxygen species. Because of its oil properties, grapeseed oil coats the skin and form an invisible barrier that would keep bacteria and dirt out. Grapeseed oil also contains vitamin E, which maintains the natural health of the skin.
When searching for that perfect antioxidant to help your skin, it is best to research on them before purchasing. A lot of advertisements may provide false information. Furthermore, better learn how to read the labels, so you can also know the antioxidant components they contain.

The Truth About Image Skin Care
Recently, I was asked to evaluate the Image skin care product line. They seem like good products, judging by the information that you can get at their website. But, there is some missing information.
First of all, you can't order the products on line, unless you are a spa owner or a retailer. If you are a retailer, you can't sell the products online. Apparently, you have to call to place an order or buy them in a spa, which, of course, means talking to a salesperson.
I have no problem with salespeople, but I used to be one. So, I know their tricks. They want you on the phone so that they can explain "why" their products are so expensive.
They can tell you about all of the benefits, before they give you a price. By the time that the sales pitch is over, most people will buy, without doing any comparative shopping and that's what the salesperson wants.
I can't tell how much Image skin care products cost, because I didn't make the call. I didn't see any reason to, when there are other products on the market that contain more effective ingredients and sale for a reasonable price. The bottles are larger, so I don't have to reorder as often. Plus, I can order them online, which is important to me.
Let's say you are looking for an effective anti-aging cream. Image's "bio-peptide" cream is one of the products that the company offers for that purpose. They actually have several others, but this one contains the most "active" ingredients.
It is designed at use for night, which is a good time to use an anti-aging cream, because the cellular rejuvenation processes go on while you sleep. The key ingredients in the Image skin care "crème" are aloe, olive oil, apricot oil, green tea, coenzyme Q10, hyaluronic acid, red clover extract, Shea butter, grape seed and cucumber extracts, as well as a polypeptide complex.
Those are very similar to the ingredients in the product that I use. It contains Shea butter, palm oil, avocado oil, active manuka honey, natural vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and a patented from of keratin (a protein similar to that found in the skin) called CYNERGY TK. During the day, I use a moisturizer that contains it, too. It has been clinically proven to stimulate the production of new cells, increase firmness, improve the skin's moisture content, reduce inflammation and act as an antioxidant.
The Image skin care line claims to provide similar results, but they don't publish studies to back up those claims. There is no doubt that many of the ingredients in their products are good. My only concern is about the inclusion of red clover, which should not be used by everyone due to its estrogenic activity.
Make no mistake about it. The inclusion of hyaluronic acid is not as beneficial as kelp extracts, which prevent the reduction of the glucose/amino complex. I believe that you can find something better than the Image skin care line and probably for a much more reasonable price.
